Musee Maillol-Fondation Dina Vierny

Maillol, danse346Musée Maillol-Fondation Dina Vierny in the 7th arrondissement holds works by modern sculptor Aristide Maillol and the personal collection of Dina Vierny, an art collector who was also Maillol’s model-muse. Special exhibitions typically feature other 20th century modern artists, such as Joan Miró through the end of July 2011.

Maillol’s bronze sculptures are found in museums and gardens like the Tuileries in Paris. Legend has it that although the two met when Maillol was past the age of 70 and Vierny was a mere teen, sculptures he’d created for decades before their meeting her resemble her. Madame Vierny spent years at Maillol’s side as model and companion, gaining a trained eye that guided her selections in building a sizeable art collection herself. She created her foundation shortly after Maillol’s death in 1944 and Musée Maillol-Fondation Dina Vierny opened in 1995. The permanent collection is intriguing for the way it juxtaposes Vierny’s diverse collection of modern art (i.e., Picasso, and Kandinsky) mixed with Rousseau’s primitive art alongside Maillol’s personal collection of his own work. Special exhibitions rotate through, typically with an emphasis on modern 20th century art—see the museum’s website for current schedule.

Don't deny yourself a pleasant lunch or snack at café La Cortigiana and salon de thé located at the museum.
