Ask a Question on Bonjour Paris

Opera Garnier

The Opera Garnier, in the classier part of the 9th arrondissement, is as beautiful as an exquisitely dressed French patron of the arts. In fact, it was built so that when the carriages rolled up to the front door to disperse the well-to-do patrons who came to see the opera, ballets, and other performances, the patrons would be well-displayed in their gorgeous regalia as they disembarked from their carriages to the flight of stairs that stood before them.  This, in fact, was the real show for the have-nots, who couldn't afford to see the performances inside. Although the days of the extravagant dressed are no longer a have or have-not thing—everybody in Paris dresses exceptionally now, the building is still one of the most beautifully "dressed" buildings in France, and should certainly be on your must-do list for "first things to see in Paris."

This story nicely tells the history of the magnificent Palais Garnier and shows the grand interiors.

So beautiful is this building that people risk life and limb to stand in the road to get the ultimate shot of the opera with its ornate and exquisite roof. The best photo opportunity: stand in front of the on the traffic island in the middle of the road, just in front of the Berlitz building.

Keep in mind that there are two Operas in Paris.  Some operas are performed at the Opera Garnier, along with ballets and other dance performances; while most of the operas are performed at the newer Opera Bastille.  Before heading to the show of your choice, be sure to check the venue when you buy your tickets so you don't end up at the wrong Opera! Even if you can’t make it to a performance at the Opera Garnier, though, do make sure to walk inside (for free) to see Marc Chagall's famous ceiling painting under the dome.

    By Margaret Kemp
They're a stunning couple, tall, slim and often stand in front of me for Body Sculpt at Gymnase Club, blocking out the view in the mirror, which suits me fine. In true Parisian style we never even make eye-contact but, I'm sure they're having a torrid affair. There's electricity, frisson and they're both so lithe! Imagine my surprise, I'm tucking into my starter at Garnier (carpaccio de bar au gingembre, legumes croquants à l'huile d'olive citronée 12€), and in they walk! I've never seen them dressed! They look great, her blonde hair sleek enough to make Deneuve angry, he looks like a testosterone dream. They disappear up the magnificent staircase to suck oysters in privacy; they're definitely having an affair. Last Updated ( Sunday, 13 November 2005 )
