Mary -- Corcisa is wonderful. It is so varied. I've been there three times and each time has been a memorable experience. That article makes me want to return.
An article in today's NY Times on Corsica may be of interest.

Couldn't agree with you more. Both the North parts and the Southern parts of the island. It was such a pity when so many thousands of forest caught fire. We had stayed there one night just before -- and what a beautiful place!

The villages are beautiful. HMMM - think my next vacation will be there. wink.gif

There are many specials on ferries if you look for them. I think a Eurail pass entitles you to a 50% discount.

I have a Provençal friend who was born in Corsica. My SIL's best friend was Gilbert Becaud's third wife who retains the Corsica home. It looks lovely. (the island)
the Corsica Ferries company:

makes the transportation (about 3 hours), from Toulon, Nice, Savona or Livorno (Italy), to Ajaccio, Propriano, Bastia...

Corsica doesn't seem to be well-known by tourists.
It's a wonderful island "île de beauté" "kalliste" (= beauty in ancient greek language), with beautiful landscapes (mountains, beaches...).
It's a very authentic and wild culture, with proud and charismatical inhabitants, a food with strong influences (sea and mountains, with pricky peal, strong goat's cheeses, wild pork, chestnut alcohol/ cakes...)
Each village has its secrets, and the landscapes are over-protected against touristic buildings. The corsican culture is very charming and interesting.
I often go in Corsica for holidays.
All the west coast is marvellous (the eastern coast doesn't present a lot of interest.), from the "Cap Corse" to "Porto Vecchio", without forgetting "Porto", "Propriano", "Bonifacio", the Gulf of Rondinara...

look at pictures of cities, beaches, mountain villages and people on this website:
