Louvre at nightThere is no other city like the City of Light at Christmastime. Paris is awash in stunning lights everywhere you look and the streets are scented with the aroma of roasting chestnuts. Christmas markets abound and ice skating is to be enjoyed as well. If you are fortunate enough to be visiting Paris in December you are in for an amazing treat! And if you are looking to pop in here and there to warm your toes here is this month’s listing of places and events to warm up!

 

Opera, Ballet and Theatre Performance

Palais Garnier

Balanchine / Brown / Bausch – Choreographer George Balanchine, December 10 – 29th

Three works from various repertoires: George Blanchine’s lyrical abstract, Trish Brown’s O Ztozony/O and Pina Bausch’s Rite of Spring.

The Bartered Bride, Conductor Constantin Trinks, December 4th – 27th

The national opera of the Czech Republic, this opera is considered a model for folk opera in general.

Opéra Bastille

Le Nozze de Figaro – Conductor Philippe Jordan (A) and Dan Ettinger (B), through June 11th 2011

An opera buffa in four acts, this is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart at his best.

Mathis der Maler, Conductor Christoph Eschenbach, through December 6th

Written by Paul Hindemith, this opera in seven scenes focuses on works by Matthias Grunewald, in particular his piece, Isenheim Altarpiece.

Ariadne auf Naxos, Conductor Philippe Jordan, December 11 – 30th

A pinnacle of 20th century opera, this performance combines both tragedy and comedy.

Swan Lake, Choreographer Rudolf Nureyev, through January 5th 2011

Tchaikovsky’s first and most famous ballet takes the Opera Garnier through the holiday season.  The show runs through January 5th.

Paris Events in December

The Gucci Masters – International Competition in Show Jumping

3-5 Head to the Parc des Expositions Nord Villepente for this 5-star rated international show jumping competition

The Salon du Cheval

4-12 This event includes the Gucci Masters, as well as ongoing adventure for Equestrians.  This salon features everything from the above-mentioned Gucci Masters to the World Arabian Horse Championship.

The Paris Boat Show

4-12 This show is held at the Porte de Versailles and not only features amazing water vessels, you will also find an array of everything water, including destinations.

Disney on Ice

1-12 The Paris Zenith will come alive with Disney this holiday season.   No translation needed for kids to enjoy their favourite Disney characters.

My Fair Lady (Performed in English)

9 December – 2 January If you are looking for a bit of theatre to enjoy in English over the holiday season this is a wonderful venue to take in a show.

Le Grand Tasting

10-11 Over 100 châteaux will exhibit the best of their wines at the Carrousel du Louvre.  Grab a glass and have a little patience as this event sees over 20,000 visitors in the two days it is held.

Lumen de Lumine, Light Born of Light at Notre Dame

Through 31 December – See the nativity recounted on a 100m screen and hear the music come alive.  This free exhibit is held within Notre Dame.

French Basketball All-Star Game

30 See the best basketball players in the professional league take to the courts at Bercy - sure sight to take in if you are a sports fan.
